Can I Claim Compensation For Being Stabbed?
The CICA is an executive agency funded by the Ministry of Justice established to give the victims of violent crimes a means of claiming compensation. This is done by making a criminal injury claim.
In order to claim compensation for being stabbed, you will need to show the CICA the following:
- You were the victim of a violent crime as defined within The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme 2012.
- That crime occurred in Great Britain (England, Scotland or Wales) or another relevant place.
- The crime was reported to the police.
- Your claim is started within the CICA’s 2-year time limit (however, exceptions to this can be considered on an individual basis).
What Stab Injuries Could You Claim For?
A stabbing can result in a variety of different injuries. We have given a few examples of injuries that such attacks could cause here:
- Soft tissue injuries.
- Damage to internal organs.
- Bodily scarring.
- Psychological trauma.
- Loss of limbs or digits.
- Broken bones.

How Do I Claim Compensation For A Stabbing?
In order to make a criminal injury claim through the CICA, you will need to provide certain evidence, such as:
- Your crime reference number. This is why it is vital that the crime be reported to the police.
- Proof that you meet the residency requirements.
- Medical evidence highlighting what injuries you sustained.
You will not need to prove the crime occurred. The CICA will liaise with the police for any additional evidence they may need for your claim.
One of our expert solicitors could help you with gathering the evidence you need for your criminal injury claim. Contact our advisors today to see if you could work with one of them.

Can I Claim On Behalf Of A Loved One For Fatal Stab Injuries?
The Scheme makes provision for certain qualifying relatives to claim compensation for a loved one’s death. What this means is you could receive payments for bereavement, dependency, or a child, where applicable.
Qualifying relatives include:
- The spouse or civil partner of the deceased.
- A partner who lived in the same household continuously for 2 years prior to their death.
- A spouse or partner of the deceased who could not live with them due to health issues.
- A child or parent.
- A spouse or civil partner, or a former partner who was financially dependent on them.
To see if you could claim compensation for a stabbing that led to a loved one’s death, you can contact our advisors.
How Long Will It Take To Receive Compensation For Being Stabbed?
The CICA cannot state how long it will take to assess your application, as this is dependent on obtaining and considering all applicable evidence to decide if you are entitled to any compensation and how much.
However, they do state that they aim to assess the majority of applications within 12 months. Certain cases could take longer to finalise to ensure that the compensation you receive reflects the severity of your injuries and their long-term impacts.

Please be advised that the first entry was not taken from The Scheme.

- The highest value injury will receive 100% of the tariff amount.
- The second-highest value injury will receive 30% of the tariff amount.
- Finally, the third highest value injury is compensated at 15%.
While the CICA do not award compensation for more than 3 injuries, a separate tariff not affected by the formula is used in cases of pregnancy, loss of a foetus, or the contraction of an STI as a result of the violent crime.
What Financial Losses Can I Claim For After A Criminal Injury?
As part of your compensation for being stabbed, you may also receive special expenses for certain financial losses. These expenses includes:
- Any physical aids damaged in the incident.
- Equipment needed to cope with the injuries suffered.
- Home adaptations required to accommodate your injuries.
To be able to receive special expenses, you need to prove that they were directly caused by your injuries. They must also be available for free elsewhere and be necessary and reasonable.
You could also receive a loss of earnings payment if you meet certain eligibility criteria.

Can I Make A No Win No Fee Claim For Stabbing Injuries?
You can find out if you are eligible to claim compensation for being stabbed through the CICA by speaking to our advisors. If our team have decided you have a valid claim, they can connect you with one of our dedicated criminal injury solicitors.
Our solicitors can offer their services on a strictly No Win No Fee basis under a Conditional Fee Agreement (CFA). This type of contract puts the advantage firmly with the claimant, with benefits such as:
- No solicitor fees to pay to start work on the claim.
- There will also be no solicitor fees for that work during the actual claims process.
- Finally, if the claim fails, there will be no solicitor fees to pay at all.
If you win the claim, you will receive criminal injuries compensation. A percentage of this compensation will make up the solicitor’s success fee as a payment for the work done on your case. As the percentage for success fees is capped by The Conditional Fee Agreements Order 2013, you will keep the majority of any compensation you receive.
