A Guide To CICA Compensation Payouts
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is an executive agency sponsored by the Ministry of Justice that was established to give those harmed by violent crime a means of seeking compensation. To help explain the work they do, this guide provides several examples of CICA payouts.
In addition to providing an explanation of how criminal injuries compensation is determined, we also explain the eligibility criteria to start a claim through the CICA and what evidence you will need to provide during this process.
Our final section examines the specific No Win No Fee contract offered by JF Law’s expert criminal injury solicitors, paying particular attention to how claimants will benefit when making their claim under these highly desirable terms.

Examples Of CICA Payouts
Our examples of CICA payouts have been taken directly from the tariff of injury in the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme 2012. It’s important we emphasise this a fixed tariff so whatever amount is listed is what shall be paid out for that injury.
The multiple injuries formula can also be applied in cases where more than one injury has been sustained. In these cases, the payout is awarded in the following increments:
- 100% of the tariff amount for the highest value injury.
- 30% for next highest, or an equal value injury.
- 15% for the third highest, or an equal value injury.
It is not possible to be compensated for more than 3 injuries by the CICA, and the maximum payout is £500,000. However, payments from a separate tariff not subject to the multiple injuries formula can be made if you become pregnant, lose a fetus or contract a sexually transmitted infection as a result of a crime of violence.
Below we have included a series of tables to show the tariff amounts from the 2012 Scheme. If you have questions or would like a free eligibility assessment, get in touch with our team today.
Compensation Amounts For GBH
Compensation amounts for grievous bodily harm (GBH) are some of the highest that can be paid out. GBH is one of the most serious crimes that can be committed and encompasses only the most serious cases of physical assault.
We have taken some of the injuries from the 2012 Scheme that could constitute a case of grievous bodily harm and created this table.
Compensation Table
We should emphasise that all of these amounts are fixed, apart from the first entry, which is the maximum the CICA will pay out for multiple injuries as well as qualifying financial losses.

Sexual Abuse And Assualt CICA Payouts
Here we have set out some of the tariff amounts for sexual abuse and assault. These figures can also be applied in historical cases. We will examine the limitation periods for claiming through the CICA below; however, particularly in cases of historical abuse, the CICA can exercise their discretion in accepting claims from outside the limitation period if exceptional circumstances prevented a police report being filed or a claim being made.
At JF Law, we fully appreciate and understand just how distressing and difficult seeking compensation and indeed justice for such crimes can be. Our advisory team are on hand 24 hours a day to provide advice and check your eligibility for free.

Can Claims Be Made For Financial Losses?
Yes, claims can be made for financial losses. In criminal injury claims, these are called special expenses. When claiming special expenses, you need to be able to show that these costs are necessary, not available for free somewhere else and directly result from the violent crime.
Examples of special expenses could include:
- Care costs relating to meal prep, bodily functions and other household tasks if you cannot do these safely on your own.
- Specialised equipment such as kitchen aids or a modified car.
- Accessibility installations. For example, stairlifts, ramps or handrails.
- The cost of managing your affairs in cases where mental capacity has been reduced.
You could also claim for a loss of earnings, although there are some eligibility criteria you will need to meet. To inquire further about financial losses in a criminal injury claim, get in touch with our advisors today.
Could I Be Eligible To Receive A CICA Payout?
You could be eligible to receive a CICA payout if you meet the eligibility requirements. In order to claim compensation for criminal injury through the CICA, you will need to show:
- You were injured in a crime of violence, as defined by the 2012 Scheme
- That crime took place in Great Britain (England, Scotland or Wales) or another relevant place.
- The crime was reported to the police.
- Your claim is made within the time limit, which is generally 2 years.
As well as meeting the criteria, it is important to provide some supporting evidence for the claim. You do not need to concern yourself with proving the crime took place, the CICA will liaise with the police to acquire this evidence. What you need to provide is:
- Proof you meet the residency requirements.
- Your crime reference number, this is why it is very important that the crime is reported.
- Evidence of any special expenses you are seeking compensation for.
- Medical documents showing what injuries you have sustained.

How To Make No Win No Fee CICA Claims
To make a No Win No Fee CICA claim, talk to our team today. As well as providing free advice, we can assess your eligibility to make a criminal injury claim.
Our dedicated solicitors can offer eligible claimants their services under a Conditional Fee Agreement (CFA). The CFA means claimants are not held liable for solicitors’ service fees at the start of or during the claim itself, and there are no service fees to pay if your claim is not a success.
A success fee is deducted from the compensation payout in the event of a successful claim. The maximum percentage that solicitors can charge for this fee is 25%, as set out by The Conditional Fee Agreements Order 2013.
What this means is that most of the payout will go directly to you.
